Abe Vigoda, ator de “O poderoso chefão”, morreu aos 94 anos. Ele interpretou o personagem Salvatore Tessio nos dois primeiros longas, de 1972 e 1974.
A causa não foi revelada, mas ele teria falecido em um hospital em Nova York. O papel que o deixou famoso foi o de Salvatore Tessio em O Poderoso Chefão e O Poderoso Chefão II – ele ainda dublou personagens em outros games da franquia.
Na TV, seu papel mais famoso foi o do detetive Phil Fish, na série Barney Miller, na década de 1980, pelo qual foi indicado três vezes ao prêmio Emmy.
Um filme que o trouxe de volta ao cinema foi a comédia Olha Quem Está Falando, aonde interpretou o avô, em1989.
Abraham Charles “Abe” Vigoda foi um intérprete de bons papéis secundários (como “Sal Tessio” no filme The Godfather).
O ator Abe Vigoda ficou famoso não pelos seus trabalhos, mas tornou-se conhecido ao ter sua morte anunciada por engano na revista People em 1982. Vigoda levou o erro na esportiva, posando para uma foto dentro de um caixão enquanto segurava um exemplar daquela edição da revista. Desde então o fato tem sido motivo de piada, com um site que informa a “condição atual” do ator e até uma extensão para o Mozilla Firefox que diz se ele está vivo ou morto.
Segundo o diretor Francis Ford Coppola, Abe foi escalado para o papel de “Tessio”, em O Poderoso Chefão (1972) a partir de um casting aberto. Ele foi selecionado a partir de um pool de 500 atores desconhecidos que fizeram testes para o papel.
